In the name of God Amen, I
Stephen Calense of the Parish of St George in the
County of Middlesex, mariner being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind
memory and understanding praised be god for the same. Do for avoiding
controversies after my decease make publish and declare this to be my last will
and testament in writing in manner and form following that is to say First I
commend by soul into the hands of the Almighty God who gave it hoping through
the **** death and intervention of my Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ to have full pardon for all my sins and my Body I commit to the
Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named
and as to such Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I give
and dispose thereof as followeth:
Imprimis I give and bequeath unto Calense
Amis son of Edmund Amis of
the Parish of St George aforesaid sailmaker the sum
of forty pounds when he shall arrive at the age of twenty one years but in case
he should not attain that age the same so bequeathed shall devolve to his
parents Edmund and Ann Amis.
Item I give to the said Edmund and Ann his wife the
sum of five pounds **** for mourning
Item I give unto sister Mary Amis of Limehouse aforesaid a
ring of the value of one guinea.
Item I give unto my brother Thomas Calenso of Penzance
in the county of Cornwall labourer the sum of twenty
pounds of lawful money of Great Britain.
Item I give and bequeath unto my four nephews John
Stephen Thomas and Robert Calenso sons of the above named Thomas Calenso the
sum of 25 pounds each viz 25 to John, 25 to Stephen,
25 to Thomas and 25 to Robert to be paid to them at my demise and if one or
more of the said brothers shall happen to depart this life before the time of
my demise this aforesaid sum of oneh hundred pounds
intended to be divided among the aforesaid four brothers shall in this case be
equally shared among or between the survivors or surviving brother.
Item I give and bequeath to my niece Hannah Calenso
one of the daughters of the said Thomas Calenso the sum of fifty pounds of
lawful money to be paid unto her with interest for the same at the end of
twelve months next after my demise.
Item I give and bequeath unto Sarah Calenso and Ann
Calenso two of the daughters of the said Thomas Calenso the sum of twenty
pounds a piece of lawful money to paid unto them respectively as soon as they
shall severally and respectively attain their several
respective ages of twenty one together with all such interest and dividends and
profits thereof as shall in the mean time be made of this same and for that
purpose. I do hereby order and direct my executors hereafter named to place out
or keep this said sum of forty pounds placed out on government or other
securities and my mind and will is that in case that either of my nieces Sarah
Calenso and Ann Calenso shall happen to depart this life before her attainment
of the age of twenty one years then the legacy of her so dying shall go and be
paid to the survivor of them the said Sarah Calenso and Ann Calenso and in the
case both of them shall happen to depart this life before the attainment of the
said age of twenty one years the said
sum of forty pounds so given to them shall devolve and be invested in my four
nephews before named the sons of the said Thomas Calenso and I do in such case
hereby give the same unto them John Stephen Thomas and Robert Calensos accordingly.
Item I give and bequeath unto my housekeeper Susannah
Elmore if she shall be living at the time of my death the sum of fifty pounds
to be paid unto her at the end of twelve months next after my demise with
interest.
Item I give and bequeath to the said Susannah Elmore
the sum of five pounds for mourning and likewise my stone ring tea chest and
two china masons to be paid and delivered to her immediately after my demise.
Item I give unto Mr Thomas Dalbright
the sum of five pounds for mourning to be paid to him immediately after my
decease also I give unto Mr William Coswell of
the ****** of St Catherine’s near the
Tower of London five pounds for mourning to be paid immediately after decease.
Item I give and bequeath to the reverend Mr David
Minor of Broadstreet of Gravol
Lane in the parish of St George’s aforesaid the sum of five pounds of lawful
money of Great Britain in trust for the poor of the dissenting congregation in
Broad Street aforesaid whereof the said Mr Minor is now minister so by him
distributed in such parts and proportions and amongst such objects he shall see
fit also I give and bequeath to the said Mr David Minor the sum of fifty
pounds.
Item I give and bequeath to Mrs
Mary Dawson of ***** Down of Southwark the sum of
five pounds.
Item I give and bequeath to Mr John Troyman of St Catherine’s aforesaid merchant the sum of ten
pounds.
Item I give and bequeath unto Mr David Forbes of the
parish of Christ Church in the county of Middlesex ***** the sum of forty
pounds.
Item all the rest and residue and remainder of my
estate whatsoever and wheresoever both real and
personnel whersoever the same may be or whatsoever
the same may consist I give devise and bequeath the same and every part thereof
unto and amongst all and every child and children of my said brother Thomas
Calenso who shall be living at the time of my decease equally between them
share and share alike.
And lastly I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint
the said Mr David Minor, John Troyman and david Forbes joint executors of this my last will and
testament hereby revoking and making void all former and other wills by me at
any time heretofore made and do ***** this only to be and stand as and for my last will and
Testament .
In witness whereof I the said Stephen Calenso have to
this my will contained in three sheets of paper. In the first two sheets thereof set my hand at the
foot of each sheet and to this last sheet set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of October in the thirty
third year of the reign of his majesty King George the second over Great
Britain and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty

and ***** by the said testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the
presence of us who in the Testator’s presence and had the request and in the
presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses hereto …..William James & Thomas Prichard.
This
will was proven at London the fourth day of February in the year of our Lord
one thousand and seven hundred and sixty before the worshipfull
William ***** Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the right Worshipfull
Edward Simpson Doctor of Laws Master ****** or Commisionery
of the Perogative Court of Canterbury lawfully
constituted by the oaths of reverend David Minor and David Forbes two of the
executors named in the said will to who administration was granted of all and
singular goods chattels and credits of the deceased having been first sworn
duly to administer power reserved to make the like grant to John Troyman the other executor named in the said will when he
shall apply for the same.
